Guangzhou, the “Flower City”, is enveloped in the fragrance of flowers all year round. “Flourishing flowers keep the eyes occupied” is no doubt a perfect line to describe the way the city impacts people’s senses.
It covers all main downtown areas and cultural sites in 11 districts, Huacheng Square, Lychee Bay, Tianhe Sports Center, Haizhu Lake, Yuntai Park, Yuexiu Park, Canton Tower, Museum of the Western Han Dynasty Mausoleum of the Nanyue King and Guangzhou Museum included.
The leafy oasis of Shamian Island, which was acquired as a foreign concession in 1859 after the two Opium Wars, is a peaceful respite from the city. Back in 19th century, the British and French were granted permission to set up their warehouses on this “sand surface island”. The sandbank was connected to the mainland by several bridges, with iron gates that prohibited any Chinese from entering the island. Major renovation has restored some of the buildings to their original appearance, making the island a popular tourist attraction.
The Pearl River is China’s third longest river spanning over eight provinces. It derives its name from a stone island resembling a huge pearl, polished by the constantly flowing water of the river. Pearl River night cruises are a main tourist attraction because of its spectacular night view of the commercial mansions and buildings along its way, radiant with lights and bathed in silver moonlight.
An old saying reminds us that not long ago, Guangzhou was a city with numerous waterways and canals, with a rich culture developed along the banks of the Pearl River and which for centuries made up much of the city’s charm. The municipal government has recently completed a large renovation campaign to uncover one of these canals. With an abundance of trees, numerous shops, restaurants, old buildings, cultural and art museums, Lychee Bay is a major attraction in Guangzhou.
The highest TV Tower in the world, it is located on the new city axis and offers a panoramic view of Guangzhou city. Canton Tower is not only the launch tower for TV signals, but has also a sightseeing platform, dining venues and other functions. As a landmark of Guangzhou, the tower shows the spirit of “dynamic Guangzhou welcoming challenges and embracing the world”.
Designed by Zaha Hadid, a renowned international architect, the Opera House is as important as the Beijing National Theatre and the Shanghai Theatre.
The new Guangdong Museum features a traditional Chinese courtyard motif as a “lacquer box”. It is a larger-scale showcase of Lingnan’s culture, natural resources and science.
Named after Xian Xinghai, a renowned Chinese composer, and located in Ersha Island, it consists of a symphony hall with 1500 seats, a chamber music hall, a floating stage and a musical fountain.
The Chen Clan Academy is one of the best preserved ancestral halls representing the folk art of southern China. Whilst the building itself is sculpted artfully, the collection inside displays the importance of the site. Southern Chinese wood and brick carvings, pottery, plasters and iron engravings preserve the area’s history.
Designed by reputable Chinese architect Lu Yanzhi and sponsored by many overseas Chinese and Guangzhou citizens, Dr. Sun Yat-Sen's Memorial Hall is a major national cultural relic of Guangdong Province commemorating the great forerunner of the Chinese revolution.
